Q. I receive a lot of spam emails. Can you help? A. Spam is a major problem that effects everyone, and is one that is not so simple to eradicate. To help combat spam the Australian government have brought out the Spam Act. It is a complex problem because there is no 100% sure way for a computer system to differentiate a spam email from a legitimate one. We cannot fully block spam emails at our end because of the small chance of blocking legitimate emails (known as false positives).
We highly recommend that you have a spam filter on your computer. The filter doesn't delete the emails, but places them in a "spam emails" folder. This gives you the opportunity to look over all the spam before permanently deleting them, ensuring that there are no legitimate emails amongst them. Most spam filtering software requires this type of intervention from the user, not only to check for legitimate emails wrongly labelled as spam (false positives), but also to "teach" the filter to better identify what is spam and what is not.
Most computer shops sell spam filtering software. Here's one that you can download and try out for free: ella.
Other things we recommend include:
- Never type your email address on your website;
- Never submit or give out your email address unless you're 100% sure it will not end up in the hands of spammers;
- Try not to use common email names or aliases like "info@..." or "john@.." - use a combination of your first and last names, like "john.brown@...". This will make it harder for spammers to guess your email address when they visit your site.
- Protect your email address with your life.
- If spam becomes too much, change your email address and let your contacts know. Don't forget to change it on your new business cards.
